New Lt. Governor of the Andaman Islands inaugurated

On 5th January 2004 Prof. Ramachandra Ganesh Kapse has taken over as the 8th Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The new Lt. Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands was administered the oath of office and secrecy by the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, Mr. Ashok Kumar Mathur.
Mr. Pramod Mahajan, the National General Secretary of Bhartaiya Janata Party (BJP, the Hindu Nationalist Party at present in power in New Delhi) was also present during the swearing-in ceremony .
Born on 1st December 1933 at Nasik (Maharashtra), the new Lt.Governor holds a Master degree in Marathi and Sanskrit literature and also graduated in law (LLB) from the University of Bombay.
Retired as Head of the Department of Marathi Literature at D.G. Ruparel College, Bombay (Mumbai), he was a Member of Lok Sabha (Thane Constituency), the Indian Houses of Parliament, from 1989 to 1996 and Member of Rajya Sabha from 1996 to 1998. He was also Member of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly (Kalyan Constituency) from 1978 to 1989 and was the Leader of the BJP group in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1985 to 1989. He was also Member of Kalyan Municipality from 1962 to 1974.
He is a Member the Hindu Nationalist Party since 1955 and was a member of the party's National Executive for 8 years aas well as Vice- President of its Maharashtra section for 2 years.
Prof. Kapse is Honorary Advisor, Bureau of Parliamentary Studies and Training since 1998 until today, President of Pragati Pratishtahn (a Non-Government-Organisation working in tribal belt of Thane District, Maharashtra) as well as office bearer of various educational, cultural and co-operative organizations.
