The Department of Ethnography holds around 350,000 objects, representing the cultures of indigenous peoples throughout the world.
Its relatively small holding (in relation to its enormous collections of other cultures) of Andamanese objects holds:
- 93 objects donated by R.C. Temple and is catalogued under order 905966, dept. reg. vol. 1, 1861-88; 1903-07. Othe donations were made by
- items donated by M.V. Portman (1886, envelope 1774)
- items donated by E.H. Man (listed in the location codes project of 21st February 1986, 59 pages, along with donations from Man, Portman, Temple and others)
- an ethnographc document donated by W.H. Burton (dated 1933, no. 1714 ).
Between 1970 and 1997 the Department was well known for its exhibitions and related activities as the Museum of Mankind off Piccadilly in London. The department is now returning to the Bloomsbury area of London where the British Museum is located.
The Anthropology Library of the British Museum is one of the world's major specialist anthropological collections with its origins in the19th century. Its standing was further enhanced by the donation of the library of the Royal Anthropological Institute in 1976.
The journal collection is indexed by the Anthropological Index Online, a free online service. Fellows and Junior Fellows of the Royal Anthropological Institute are eligible to borrow items donated by the RAI; other researchers may only consult material in the Library.
