The Museum developed from a small ethnological collection owned 1849 by the City Library and later passed into care of the city's Natural History Society and was connected with the Natural History Museum. In 1868 the collection had acquired a total of 645 objects. In 1871 it was re-named the "Museum of Cultural History". In 1879 the Museum received its own charter and became the "Museum of Ethnology "(Museum für Völkerkunde).

The Museum holds around 50 Andamanese objects collected by one Mr. Konietzko.

A list of Andamanese items held by the Hamburg Museum of Ethnology is not available.
