Pioneer Biographies

Rann Singh Mann (*1936)

 

Rann Singh Mann was born in a village near Delhi. He graduated with honors from Delhi University in 1959 , made his MSc in 1960 and his PhD in 1973 from the same university. Before joining the Anthropological Survey of India in 1969, Dr. Mann worked as an instructor in anthropology, specializing in tribal societies. He rose rapidly within the organization, becoming Superintending Anthropologist in 1977 and Deputy Director in 1980. Since 1987 he holds the post of Joint Director of the Regional Office of the Anthropological Survey of India's northwestern region at Dehra Dun.

Dr. Mann specializes in studies of socio-cultural change, applied and theoretical anthropology as well as ethnology. He has conducted research in many parts of India, including the Andamans, and is involved in the national project The People of India.

His many publications testify to his wide interests. He has been an associate editor of Human Science, a journal published by the Anthropological Survey of India. Through his participation in international workshops and conferences. Dr. Mann has become a widely-known and respected figure in anthropology.
